PREAMBLE:
When a body, initially at rest, is acted upon by a system of several non-parallel forces, it tends to accelerate in one direction with force called the resultant force, R.
The Nigerian scientist and mathematician Uwem E. Asuquo’s force-board experiment led to the discovery and development of the vector sum,
R = (ΣFsinθ / ΣFcosθ),
the mathematical model used for calculating the resultant of several non-parallel forces acting on a small rigid body.
Asuquo’s law of composition of resultant force states that, provided two or more coplanar non-parallel forces act at a point, the resultant, R of the system of forces is given by the vector sum,
R = (ΣFsinθ / ΣFcosθ).
ADVANTAGES OF USING ASUQUO’S LAW OVER THE AXES PLANE METHOD FOR CALCULATING RESULTANT FORCE, R
(1) It is much easier and quicker to use.
(2) It serves more work and writing space, especially in a problem involving several forces.
(3) The sinθ and cosθ substitutions are consistent for x and y components of all forces.
(4) It easily helps the user to overcome oversight errors.
(5) The direct trigonometrical relationship between tanθ and
R = (ΣFsinθ / ΣFcosθ)
is consistent, easily-recalled and can be used to calculate accurately the direction of R in any one of the Asuquo’s quadrants.
(6) It enables the user to process input data more easily and faster with the scientific calculator.
(7) Forces acting along the fixed axes or cardinal directions can also be expressed in x and y components easily without hesitation or confusion.
(8) All angles are measured and taken in clockwise directions from a fixed reference line — the North or y-axis.
(9) It seldom requires the use of a straight-edge (ruler) in calculation.
APPLICATIONS OF ASUQUO’S LAW
At the time of scientific experiments, the initial (or main) objective was to develop a super model that could help scientists, mathematicians and students:
(i) calculate the resultant R of several non-parallel forces acting on a particle.
(ii) determine the direction of R in a plane.
(iii) resolve a force into horizontal and vertical components.
(iv) calculate an unknown value of F when a system of several non-parallel forces acting on a particle is in equilibrium.
Nowadays, the applications of Asuquo’s law have been extended beyond the initial objective. Broadly stating, the applications and beauty of Asuquo’s law are better highlighted in the solutions to some of the applied questions that have already been drawn from related problems.
